Chester
Update 7.16.09: After two surgeries and find more dora games much physical therapy, our beautiful Chester is using his leg again! After rescue, we found that Chester had likely been hit by a car, his elbow was separated an he had a fractured pelvis. Luckily his pelvis healed perfectly, but unfortunately his shattered elbow was left untreated for at least six months. It is hard for us to think of a dog, young, beautiful, injured, alone and suffering in a back yard. Now almost fully recoved at about 18 months old, Chester is a gorgeous boy who loves other dogs and fits in well with his pack. Do you have a swimming pool? Chester adores pools and is a great swimmer, and swimming will help him continue to recover the muscle he lost in his leg during his long ordeal. We were just thrilled when Chester started using his leg again, and as you can see from the video below, he's doing quite well. Chester has been in a foster home with three other dogs, male and female, and is great around people and dogs of all ages. He is a little too curious and inspired by cats. Chester is ready for his happy ever after adoring home and has already put his painful and lonely past behind him.

Chester's original bio: Chester is a beautiful, adoreable, sweet, playful and stoic guy of no more than two years of age. Chester lived with a broken elbow for at least six months before he found himself in the shelter. The shelter asked us to help Chester. We stepped up for him. Then a member of the public came in and insisted that they adopt Chester. The shelter relented after much counseling about his injury, and Chester was destined to go to a new home. We all breathed a sigh of relief, finally we thought, there is someone out there willing to help these dogs.

Two days later the shelter called. Unbelievabley, Chester's adopter decided he wanted a Rottweiler instead. Thankfully fate intervened for Chester and he is with SCGSR. He has had the surgery to repair his elbow and we're waiting for news as to whether he can use his leg or not. Frankly, we saw Chester run across the vet's yard on three legs, and although we're hoping he has all four, he has learned to be a normal German Shepherd on three legs. Chester is one of the dogs that teaches us that fate steps in to save these dogs constantly, and that there is a perfect, loving forever home waiting for him. And that home will get a real prize!

  • If you would like to meet Chester, please fill out our online application. This is the starting point in adopting from SCGSR. We strive to keep our website current within 24 hours. If you see a dog on our site, it is most likely available. The more information you give us about your dog experience, your home, your fence, children and other pets, the better we can do to match you with one of our dogs. Keep in mind that we may be working with prior applicants.

  • Our adoption donations are tax deductible and range from $300 to $500. Dogs will be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, and in most instances they will be microchipped. To those big hearted people willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems, we will work with you on adoption donation amounts.

  • The adoption process involves an application, a telephone interview, a meeting with our dogs and then a home and fence check. In certain cases photos of your house and yard may be substituted for a home check.

04.04.09: CHESTER IS ON HIS SECOND SURGERY!!

Poor Chester, a beautiful, happy, friendly and loving boy of two years at most lived the last six or seven months with his elbow torn apart. He constantly held his paw up and in front of him to try to alleviate some of the pain. His injury would have been easy to fix had it been done right away, but his family let him suffer, and the surgery became much, much more complex. Chester is now on his second expensive surgery. He first had a pin, and although the bone began to heal and Chester was in swim therapy, the pin began to back out. During his second surgery on 4.02.09, Chester received a bone graft and a metal plate to hold his bones together. He now needs three weeks of recover before he can begin therapy. The alternative was for Chester to lose his leg, and we just couldn't do that to this young, gorgeous and incredibly sweet dog without doing everything possible for him. You can see X-rays of Chester's sugeries below.

Chester has now had two very expensive surgeries and therapy totally $5,000, but he's worth it! He desperately needs your help to pay his bills. Chester is recovering in a foster home from his second surgery (4.02.09) and it will be three weeks before we can begin therapy again. Chester hopes to have enough help from friends of German Shepherds by then so he can afford the therapy it will take to get him well. He's counting on you!

Help Chester pay for his care! Again we have to ask you for help, all because people neglect the care of these beautiful animals. Chester is hoping for your help right now. Every little bit helps and he needs your support today. You can also make a donation by PayPal, and we'll add it to the total amount raised! Thank you so much to FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) who made the first contribution of $300 for Chester's surgery!
