How to Adopt
 Adoption Process
The adoption process involves an application, a telephone interview, and a home and fence check. In certain cases photos of your house and yard may be substituted for a home check. Introductions with prospective dogs can occur at adoption events, by appointment at our boarding facility or at an arranged location if the dog is in a foster home, or during the home check.
Adoption Application
The adoption process begins with completing our online application. The more information you give us about your dog experience, your home, your fence, children and other pets, the better we can match you with one of our dogs. If you are interested in a particular dog or dogs on our site be sure to indicate them on the application. We strive to keep our website current within 24 hours but we may also be working with prior applicants. SCGSR makes every effort to place dogs in appropriate homes.
Adoption Donation
Our adoption donation ranges from $300 to $500 and is tax deductible. To those big hearted people willing to adopt an older dog or a dog with physical problems, we can work with you on the adoption donation amount. The average cost of caring for our dogs, including shelter fees, spay/neuter, veterinary care, transport, boarding and feeding far exceeds our adoption donations. In the case of a dog needing surgery or specialized care, costs can reach thousands of dollars. We greatly appreciate any additional contribution you may be able to make at the time of adoption. Your donation will help save the next dog after yours. Join our rescue family and help us continue our efforts to save lives!
Adoption Policy
Prior to releasing a dog to an adoptive family, an adoption contract will be executed and the adoption donation will be made at that time. The dog will be current on vaccinations, and will be spayed or neutered. Copies of all records in the possession of SCGSR will be mailed approximately one week after the adoption. SCGSR does not normally adopt outside of Southern California except in extraordinary circumstances. If you live out of the Southern California area and would like to adopt, please email us photographs of your house, yard and fence after submitting your application. Along with photographs, we'll need two references, one from a veterinarian. Keep in mind that our policy is to always do home checks, and if you're out of our area, we'll need to be comfortable that we're sending our dogs to a good home.
Adoption Contract Highlights
Some of the highlights of our adoption contract include the following:
- Adopter will license the dog and the dog will wear a collar at all times with its license and an ID tag with the owner's address and telephone number.
- The dog will not be allowed to run loose and fencing will be kept secure. The dog will not be allowed to ride in the back of an open truck or vehicle.
- The dog will be regarded as a member of the family.
- The dog will not be sold, given away or taken to a shelter but, will be returned to SCGSR under the terms of the adoption contract.
