Hank
On Thursday May 15, SCGSR received a telephone call from the Central shelter. They had a starved, emaciated 8 month old German Shepherd puppy with hair loss all over his back end, and he was in so much pain he could barely move his back legs.
It was to be Hank's last day at the shelter.
SCGSR volunteers rushed to the shelter and whisked Hank to the vet for an exam. You could see the pain in his eyes. Our vet found this poor puppy had very little musculature, dysplasia and needed surgery on both hips. We were afraid Hank might not have enough will to live or the strength to walk after his surgery, but Hank is doing his part! Now our vet says Hank has a good chance at a normal life! We didn't have time to think about where the money would come from - SCGSR volunteers felt that if this baby had a chance at a pain free, well-loved and happy life, SCGSR would make that happen!
Hank has had his sugery and has recovered so fast our heads are spinning. He loves to play, he loves his toys and playing fetch, and loves other dogs. Hank has no limitations on what he can do, and he should be fine for the rest of his life. SCGSR volunteers are so happy we can help a deserving youngster like Hank go from dismal prospects to a wonderful life!
If you would like to meet Hank, please fill out our online application. This is the starting point in adopting from SCGSR. We strive to keep our website current within 24 hours. If you see a dog on our site, it is most likely available. The more information you give us about your dog experience, your home, your fence, children and other pets, the better we can do to match you with one of our dogs. Keep in mind that we may be working with prior applicants.
Our adoption donations are tax deductible and range from $300 to $500. Dogs will be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, and in most instances they will be microchipped. To those big hearted people willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems, we will work with you on adoption donation amounts.
The adoption process involves an application, a telephone interview, a meeting with our dogs and then a home and fence check. In certain cases photos of your house and yard may be substituted for a home check.
Going home with foster mom, Laurel.
Hank's Story:
Update 6.04.08: Hank had his stitches out today! Everyone at Dr. Tugend's office was so happy to see Hank, and Hank was happy to see them too. Hank is progressing so fast we can't believe it! He plays with his foster sister Sheba, goes up and down stairs, and is eating like a champ. Hank has gained about 7 pounds, and his movement is much more stable, and his face - well - you can just see in Hank's eyes that he's able to be a puppy for the first time. He loves love, he loves to play, and he doesn't so much love to get his nails trimmed! Hank's prognosis for a long and pain free life is wonderful. He will continue to improve over the next several months as he grows and gains strength, and he'll be available for adoption soon!
Update 5.28.08: Hank schmoozes his new foster mom, Laurel! Hank proves he knows how to work it by crawling into Laurel's lap seconds after she arrives at the vet's office to take him to his new foster home! We don't see any pain in Hank's eyes now, we see puppy spunk! One week post-surgery, Hank is getting up and walking on his his own. He was supposed to be in a sling at this point, but he doesn't need one!
He's very wobbly and still painfully thin, (see more photos here) but Hank has the heart of a lion and so much will to live. Hank will be fit and fine in no time with some loving care, and he wants everyone to know he couldn't have done it without their support. With all our hearts, we thank all of Hank's friends!!
5.22.08: HANK HAS EXCEEDED HIS GOAL! We thank all of Hank's friends for their overwhelming support. Hank will go to his foster home with Charlie, Laurel and foster sister Sheeba (formerly known as Josie) on Tuesday to continue his recovery. We will update everyone on Hank's progress soon!
On Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 8 month old Hank takes his first post-surgery steps with a little help from his friends at VCA Main Street Animal Hospital.
