IMPORTANT-SAFETY FIRST!
For the safety of our dogs and the public, SCGSR provides volunteer orientations and training in dog handling. Volunteers who handle dogs at events are required to go through the orientation and training. For convenience we have recorded these sessions and you can watch them here. Every dog is an individual and will react to different situations in a unique manner. Although we do our best to evaluate a dog's temperament, we have not seen every dog in every possible situation. Please use caution with any unfamiliar dog, particularly around young children. Mishaps can have severe consequences for SCGSR, dogs and handlers. Always ask a senior volunteer for guidance when interacting with dogs at adoption events, dog walking, or with dogs in any situation, anywhere, where you have concerns. Remember, safety first!

Jessie Sadly, on 12.22.10, beautiful Jessie passed away. Our vets were never able to cure Jessie but made a heroic effort to save her and give her comfort. Jessie was well loved and happy until the end and we will always honor her memory and miss her dearly. At the Rainbow Bridge, Jessie will greet the volunteers of VCA Main Street and SCGSR, who all loved her dearly. High five, Jessie!
Meet Jessie. She is a three year old purebred German Shepherd, purchased from a breeder. Her skin is raw and her fur is sparse and oily, the pads of her feet are so swollen its painful for her to walk, but she still reaches up her paw to you with all the love and hope in her eyes - it just breaks our hearts. Jessie is yet another reminder to us how important rescue is. People think of dogs who are purchased as somehow superior to dogs they find in rescues and shelters. Jessie is an example of how misguided that notion is. Jessie really needs our help, and we need your help to make her better. Please click on the orange "donate" button and the top of the page and give Jessie a chance at a healthy life.
Update 6.24.10: Jessie is making progress! We're very happy to report that Jessie's skin is beginning to clear up. Our vet's prognosis was grim, but he has been working hard to find the right solution for Ms. Jessie and we may have it!
Her condition may be as simple as the need for supplemental Zinc and/or Vitamin A, because with supplementation she has begun to improve. Many northern breeds have Zinc insufficiency that can lead to severe skin problems.
Please consider making a donation to help SCGSR defray the cost of Jessie's very long vet stay. She is a beautiful soul, well worth saving! Your donation will not disappear into some huge organization to pay for $100,000 plus salaries. Nobody at SCGSR makes one penny. Your donation will go to pay Jessie's vet bill! Can you foster Jessie while she recovers? Please contact Marcy if you can help her. Seriously, you have never met a nicer dog!
5.29.10: Jessie is an adorable three year old girl who is having skin problems. Her family purchased her as a cute puppy, but as it became clear Jessie wasn't going to be easily fixed, they decided to give her up to rescue. Jessie is residing at our vet's office right now and we're trying to find a way to help her look better. Everyone is just in love with her personality and she's the nicest dog who deserves to be loved despite the fact that she's not perfect. Do you have it in your heart to love a girl like Jessie? If you're perfect, or even not so perfect, but have received the love of a special dog in your life and know how much that means, maybe you can return the gift by giving some love back to Jessie.

If you would like to meet one of our dogs, please read the following information. The first step is for you to fill out our online application. This is the starting point in adopting from SCGSR. We strive to keep our website current within 24 hours. If you see a dog on our site, it is most likely available. The more information you give us about your dog experience, your home, your fence, children and other pets, the better we can do to match you with one of our dogs. Keep in mind that we may be working with prior applicants, and be patient. We are all volunteers and we will try to respond within 72 hours.
Our adoption donations are tax deductible and range from $300 up. Rescuing dogs without public subsidies is expensive. If you don't want to pay our adoption donations, please consider adopting directly from a publicly sponsored shelter. SCGSR dogs will be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, and in most instances they will be microchipped. To those big hearted people willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems, we will work with you on adoption donation amounts.
The adoption process involves an application, a telephone interview, a meeting with our dogs and then a home and fence check. In certain cases photos of your house and yard may be substituted for a home check. SoCal Rescue typically does not adopt puppies outside of San Diego County, so that we can provide continued support to adopters as puppies grow up. Adult adoptions out of area will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Jessie on 6.24.10:
Jessie as a healthy, shiny puppy. SCGSR's goal is to make Jessie this healthy once again.
