IMPORTANT-SAFETY FIRST!
For the safety of our dogs and the public, SCGSR provides volunteer orientations and training in dog handling. Volunteers who handle dogs at events are required to go through the orientation and training. For convenience we have recorded these sessions and you can watch them here. Every dog is an individual and will react to different situations in a unique manner. Although we do our best to evaluate a dog's temperament, we have not seen every dog in every possible situation. Please use caution with any unfamiliar dog, particularly around young children. Mishaps can have severe consequences for SCGSR, dogs and handlers. Always ask a senior volunteer for guidance when interacting with dogs at adoption events, dog walking, or with dogs in any situation, anywhere, where you have concerns. Remember, safety first!

Roxy
Our beautiful little Roxy passed from distemper on 01.14.11. She was adopted the same day she passed by her foster mom, and a donation was made to start the Roxy Fund to help other dogs. She probably had distemper when she came into the rescue. She progressed slowly in her symtoms until she was unable to walk or even get up. Below is a note from her foster mom. Below that is her original information. Please do not encourage irresponsible breeding by purchasing puppies from pet vendors or newspaper ads. Responsible breeding practices include vaccination of puppies, healthy and disease free environments and proper veterinary care. That is Roxy's sad message. Please help put and end to the suffering.

Thank you all for loving Roxy and for going through her final days with her. Roxy left the earth at about 9:30 am on January 14, 2010. She was about four months old. I was with Roxy the whole time. Dr. Allen said it was time and she was ready. Dr. Allen, Jose and Andrea set her up very gently, petting and soothing her. She was calm and gave her tail a valiant wag as if to thank us and say goodbye. Then I spent a few minutes alone with her telling her how much I loved her, that she fought the good fight, and that Yogi would be waiting to take her to the rainbow bridge. I told her we would continue her message and fight til we had no breath left. She seemed to understand. She had a cookie, and then went very quickly into spirit. Her little body was relaxed and beautiful and I will get her ashes and keep her with me always.
Roxy is a 10 week old (on 11.10.10) puppy who was purchased by a person in the military. He was deployed just a few weeks later and turned to SCGSR for help. Roxy is a spunky little girl who is now back learning the ropes with other puppies. She is playing very well and is spunky and assertive. She's a doll who loves to be cuddled and is very food motivated, she learned to sit for a treat in just a few seconds! Roxy is searching for a loving home with a family who can keep her safe forever!

Puppies are a ton of time, work, training, vet care and are a big commitment. Before adopting a puppy, consider whether you want to wake up multiple times at night for potty training and be home every four hours during the day to let your puppy out. Socialization and training are key at a young age. Dogs can live up to 15 years - are you in a position to provide a forever home for that long? Can you spend the time necessary to train and socialize a puppy? Don't pass over a more mature dog because you've heard they don't bond as quickly or that you can "raise" a puppy to be what you want. An adult dog proven with cats and children is a better bet than a puppy, and a lot less work for adopting families!

  • If you would like to meet one of our dogs, please read the following information. The first step is for you to fill out our online application. This is the starting point in adopting from SCGSR. We strive to keep our website current within 24 hours. If you see a dog on our site, it is most likely available. The more information you give us about your dog experience, your home, your fence, children and other pets, the better we can do to match you with one of our dogs. Keep in mind that we may be working with prior applicants, and be patient. We are all volunteers and we will try to respond within 72 hours.

  • Our adoption donations are tax deductible and range from $300 up. Rescuing dogs without public subsidies is expensive. If you don't want to pay our adoption donations, please consider adopting directly from a publicly sponsored shelter. SCGSR dogs will be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations, and in most instances they will be microchipped. To those big hearted people willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems, we will work with you on adoption donation amounts.

  • The adoption process involves an application, a telephone interview, a meeting with our dogs and then a home and fence check. In certain cases photos of your house and yard may be substituted for a home check. SoCal Rescue typically does not adopt puppies outside of San Diego County, so that we can provide continued support to adopters as puppies grow up. Adult adoptions out of area will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
